Francis
Francis is a residential property in Abbotts Barton, Winchester requiring extension and internal reconfiguration to better suit the needs of a contemporary family. The existing house suffered from a fragmented layout, with poor flow between spaces and limited connection to the rear garden. The design challenge was to introduce additional accommodation while rationalising the plan and improving spatial efficiency, without compromising the character of the original dwelling.
The solution introduces a single-storey rear extension to create a large open-plan kitchen, dining, and living space that forms the heart of the home, with improved connection to the garden. Internally, the existing kitchen is repurposed as a utility and boot room, and the WC is relocated to improve layout efficiency. Additional spaces including a pantry, playroom, music room, and study are carefully distributed to provide flexibility and clearer functional zoning.
At first floor level, a two-storey extension provides a new principal bedroom suite with dressing room and en-suite, while the existing bathroom is enlarged and improved. The extensions are composed to sit comfortably alongside the existing house, clearly distinguishing old and new while maintaining overall coherence.
The result is a more functional and legible family home with improved spatial flow, enhanced natural light, and a stronger relationship to the garden.
