Manor Gym
Manor Gym is a bespoke leisure building designed as a dedicated retreat separate from the main residence, providing a quiet and focused environment for exercise, meditation, and relaxation. The brief required a compact but highly functional structure that would sit comfortably within its landscape setting while supporting active use alongside the adjacent tennis court.
The key challenge was to create a contemporary, self-contained gym that offers privacy and retreat from the main house, while maintaining a strong visual and functional relationship with the wider leisure landscape, particularly the tennis court.
The solution is a clean, contemporary pavilion defined by a strong horizontal roof form that projects beyond the building envelope to provide shelter and solar protection. This overhanging roof shields the full-height sliding doors from excessive sun and rain, while reinforcing a clear architectural expression of lightness and horizontality.
Internally, the layout is organised to support multiple functions within a compact footprint, including a dedicated gym space, a small kitchenette for refreshments, a WC, and a discreet equipment store. The arrangement ensures the building operates efficiently as both a fitness and wellbeing space.
Positioned to overlook the tennis court, the gym also functions as a social and observational space, allowing users to engage with outdoor activity while remaining within a sheltered environment.
The building is finished in large-format full-height porcelain tiles, selected for their durability, low maintenance, and refined aesthetic quality. This material choice reinforces the contemporary character of the structure while ensuring long-term resilience in a landscape setting.
The result is a calm, robust, and finely detailed leisure building that balances performance, simplicity, and visual clarity within its rural context.
